2020 Recap and Plans for 2021

Happy New Years!  As is customary for me, every year I go back through my Youtube progress and calculate how productive my year was on Youtube, calculating my livestreams and published videos and logging how many and when.  And when looking back at 2020, I had a very unproductive year at first glance.  But 2020 was a very behind the scenes year and after examining all of the behind the scenes stuff, it was very productive.

For starters, I released a video about COPPA, which took effect in early 2020.  This unfortunately made all of my videos (except a scant few) fall under "for kids", meaning limited searching and no comments.  Thankfully, the response to that video was very productive.

However, that video was an offshoot of a huge project that my best friend and I spent a lot of valuable time and resources on.  Starting in late December 2019, we recorded 8 or 9 podcasts with the intent to edit them for clarity and release them to the public.  The project was called Don and Jerry with a goal on creating a podcast and videos on a separate channel.  With his help, we created a successful discord, edit roughly four of those podcasts together, create a discord exclusive preview and publish three video game playthroughs for our brand new Youtube Channel.  Don and I worked hard planning, recording, editing and creating for three months to get this done but unfortunately life got in the way.

A tragedy happened in February which you can read partially about on my new poem: A Girl Named Frank.  At the same time, I was diagnosed with tinnitus, which halted my ability to listen to the podcast and edit.  Around this time, I did record a couple of new videos (Mega Man X2, Lion King, GTA Liberty City Stories) but though I finished the first two, I never got my editor to work.  I chalked it up to lack of memory and put them to the side.

Fast forward a month and my tinnitus is starting to get better.  I started a Resident Evil Challenge on Mixer (as my computer stopped letting me livestream due to memory issues) and managed to beat RE0-4 as well as CVX and most of 5 before getting severely burnt out.  I also streamed most of Gears of War but I wanted something different.

I chose Super Mario Galaxy.  I started it up on my Wii U and started recording the walkthrough and to my surprise, it worked.  I managed to record all 242 stars over the course of the month and began editing them.  Unfortunately for me, my video editor still didn't want to work.

That's when it happened.  My computer's hard drive started failing.  Thankfully, I got a great new one which allows me to livestream, record and edit again.  And throughout October, November and December, I edited the 250+ videos into manageable parts, timestamped everything and created custom titles, editing them down into 70 separate videos.  This was by FAR my biggest project ever for the channel and the most time consuming, taking me nearly six months to finish.  While I am sad that I didn't get it out before September when Super Mario Galaxy was announced for rerelease, it's still done and I'm very proud of the result.  I may start SMG2 soon but I want to do a few other videos first, such as editing the numerous unedited videos on my hard drive.

I did manage to livestream quite a few more times though, streaming Story of Seasons FOMT remake and Portal but unfortunately I didn't get a lot of edited walkthroughs up (though I did manage to get a few that had been unlisted for a while).  And though I finally got my 1000 subscribers last year, I wasn't able to celebrate it much.

That's why this year, I'm cracking down.  It's gonna start with making sure the timestamps on my videos are correct and there.  You may have already noticed I've been doing this throughout today, fixing a lot of the timestamps and adding them as necessary.  This is due to Youtube's new Chapter feature, which really helps with my longform walkthroughs.  By making sure these timestamps are correct and on there, I can facilitate your viewing and make it easy to play along no matter which platform you're on.

I also plan to record a bunch of new walkthroughs starting with Phoenix Wright.  I recorded it a total of three times so far but each time video corruption reared it's head (or I wasn't a fan of the final output).  However, no more.  I got the game on Steam and I can run it smoothly, which will allow me to record it perfectly as I intend to.  I also want to finish more Zelda games as well as the remaining classic Castlevania games.  I also want to re-edit Dragon Quest 1's walkthrough to remove the random encounters and finish DQ3's walkthrough as well as a few Final Fantasies.  I really hope to follow through with this and make 2021 a much better year.

Q&A June 5, 2020

Hey guys, I came in to update my progress on the multiple projects I have behind the scenes going on and where I've been only to realize it's been a year to the day since my previous Q&A post.  So, without further ado, here's another one that should hopefully answer your questions about what's going on!

YOUTUBE/LIVESTREAM CHANNEL QUESTIONS

Q: What's going on with your channel?

A: It's been a crazy year so far (and that's without all the craziness of the world included!).  At first, I posted a video updating about how COPPA would affect my channel.  In that time, I was able to record and upload a new walkthrough as well as unhide several other previously recorded walkthroughs.  My best friend and I created the Don and Jerry Show and worked exclusively on that from December of 2019 to February of 2020 with the hopes of launching on February 28th but lots of things happened that prevented that.  In mid February, my 8 month old kitten was killed by an animal in our back yard which took the wind out of my sails for a while.  I was scheduled for a 2 week vacation in March but it was cancelled with the Coronavirus and I was diagnosed with Tinnitus which prevented me from doing any editing.  That finally cleared up in late May and while I did record a few new walkthroughs (Mega Man X2 and Leisure Suit Larry for example), I couldn't edit them until recently due to the ringing in my ears making using headphones very difficult.  Now that things are calming down, my intention is to record, edit and upload several new walkthroughs, one of which is Super Mario Galaxy.  I also hope to finish editing our previously recorded 7 podcasts and get that live as well.

I do apologize for the lack of content but I hope you understand why.

Q: Have you been livestreaming lately?

A: Yes!  I started a Resident Evil challenge in April but due to my computer deciding that it isn't powerful enough to stream with the Elgato anymore, I have been streaming exclusively on Mixer for the time being (I hope to rectify this very shortly once I can go computer shopping again).

Q: What's the RE challenge and where did it go?

A: The RE challenge was my intention to play through all 8 numbered RE games on stream and beat them, with 4, 5 and 6 being blind runs.  Unfortunately, 5 burnt me out severely on the series.  This is coupled with 50+ playthroughs between March and May leading to my burnout.  I will return to it once the burnout goes away.  In it's place I hope to stream Duke 3D, Forever, Doom/II/II/2016 and FFX.

Q: When are your next Mega Man/Mario walkthroughs coming out?  Are you gonna play any new series?

A: To be frank, I never know when my videos come out because I record these walkthroughs for fun mainly, not for notoriety or any other reason.  Because of that, the walkthroughs come out when I manage to finish them.  However, as of June 5, I have started Mario Galaxy with the intent to record all 252 stars.  Mega Man 11 will likely not be out until I can get my Elgato to record smoothly again in anything above 720P.

As far as new content goes, yes, I have Leisure Suit Larry recorded as well as Mega Man X2.  I also intend to record Phoenix Wright for the 8th time (every previous attempt was marred by technical limitations or corruption).  I also started recording Super Mario Advance 2, Super Mario Bros 3 SNES and the last few Sonic games on Genesis so hopefully I can get some content out soon!

DON & JERRY SHOW

Q: What is the Don and Jerry show?

A: Basically, my best friend of multiple decades and I got together after getting new microphones and decided we wanted to make our voices heard.  We enjoy talking about things and wanted a platform to essentially hang out and discuss new topics as well as answer Q&As.  We enjoy recording it but I hope you enjoy listening to it too.

Q: When is it coming out?

A: Don and I have been extremely busy and unable to work on the podcast lately.  I hope to finish editing our first seven podcasts relatively soon and release them so we can have more timely releases every two weeks like planned.  Stay tuned to @DonandJerryshow on twitter for announcements.

Q: Can I get involved or ask questions?

A: Sure!  Send us a question on Twitter using #DNJQNA or join our discord and ask us there!  discord.gg/88pn3kF

GAMEFAQS QUESTIONS

Q: Are you planning on returning to contributing?

A: The toxic attitude has been getting slightly better over time so I may return to writing reviews but at the moment, with all my projects, no.

The Ultimate List of Work (Planned and Complete)

Welcome one and all to the 100% complete and ultimate list: the list of all my planned and completed work! This list lists every piece of published work currently online, including links and mini descriptions of the work. Below that, you'll find our 100% authentic restaurant-quality list of planned projects. Keep in mind, however, that this list is mostly for myself and that they may take a while to reach stores near you, if ever. So don't hold your breath because they may never come out. Also, I realize that you may recognize a few of the games on the list as being heavily covered by other users. I realize this, but I'd like to try it for myself, if nothing else thank you. If it's currently in production, we'll keep you updated with a tab of how far along it is! It slices and dices! Pow! Now, without further ado, the list.

Video Walkthrough Q&A - May 28, 2010

So I decided to answer a few questions about the video walkthroughs, current and future in a new Q&A section. Granted, there hasn't been a lot of questions asked about the Video Walkthroughs, but this should help to answer any questions you may have, plus any future questions that may arrive. So, without further ado, the Q&A!

STRONG BAD VIDEO WALKTHROUGH QUESTIONS

Q: Why did you decide to make a Strong Bad video walkthrough and why was it your first?

A: I had wanted to make a video walkthrough ever since I saw my first Let's Play (of Dragon Warrior) and had all the necessary tools to make it. However, I couldn't decide on a game to cover. After playing through a demo of SBCG4AP, I loved it and decided to purchase the season from Telltale. After playing through it about 4 or 5 times, I knew the game very well. Then I remembered my plans for an LP. After testing out the video recording, I decided that it would be the perfect game to start with, due to my knowledge of it and its short length.

Q: Did you always plan to do all five or just the first one?

A: When I started, I only had plans to do a walkthrough for Homestar Ruiner, but after I finished the video walkthrough and started the text one, I decided it would be awesome to do the rest of the series.

Q: In Episode 1, you forgot to talk to The Cheat after kicking him. Why not just rerecord it?

A: I know I did, but like it says in the video description, it was corrected in a later part. I didn't rerecord because at the time, I was rather new to editing videos (which you can tell by the slight pause between where I merged two videos) and had already recorded a good amount, so I didn't want to have to start over (again).

Q: Start over again?

A: If I recall correctly, I started to record Episode 1 but messed up on something (I don't recall what). So I decided to start over.

Q: Which was your favorite episode to cover?

A: Probably Strong Badia the Free or 8-Bit Is Enough. They're the ones that made me laugh the hardest.

Q: Why didn't you go in the photo booth?

A: Simply cause I wanted the Strong Bad series to be strickly a walkthrough and show you how to beat it without clicking on random, non-essential items or visiting places you wouldn't normally have to go. I made a couple exceptions to that rule, however. The first was venturing into the photo booth at the end of episode five to show off all the costumes. The second...

Q: If you were trying to film a walkthrough, why did you record all of Stinkoman's lines?

A: ...is this case. I got an e-mail from a viewer who specifically asked that all of Stinkoman's lines be recorded. Since it was a small request and took hardly any effort, I decided why not.

Q: If there's a season two of Strong Bad, will you cover it?

A: Most likely, though it depends on what's going on at that particular time.

Q: When is the next text walkthrough coming out?

A: As soon as I'm able to complete it. Please be patient.

SUPER MARIO WORLD QUESTIONS

Q: How did a Super Mario World playthrough come about?

A: My fiancee had suggested we play this, as we both grew up with it. We had both played through it several times. This time, I came up with the idea of recording it and putting it on YouTube. She agreed and we started recording.

Q: Why wasn't this a walkthrough?

A: At first, we were simply planning to play it beginning to end, so we labeled it a Let's Play. We didn't plan on getting 100%, as at first we felt it may become boring and simply wanted to play through the game. Then, as we began to play through and get hidden exits (such as Star World 2, Green Switch, etc), I realized that we were getting close to a 100% walkthrough, so I decided to go for 100%.

Q: Why didn't you edit out the deaths in the beginning, yet at the end you did?

A: At first, we just wanted to record our playthrough and felt it unnecessary, as we weren't trying to show how to beat levels but rather a couple playing through this tremendous game. However, near the end as we began to go for 100% and the deaths became more numerous, I felt that all the deaths were wasting video time and started to edit them out. As you can clearly see from the bloopers reel, the Awesome deaths alone could have added another part.

Q: Why does Luigi look different in this version?

A: Because we're playing the All-Stars version.

WHERE'S WALDO QUESTIONS

Q: How did this come about?

A: It came about because I wanted to test a new method of recording as well as converting with the new codec. Rather than use Fraps, I used the built in AVI recorder, which unfortunately uses the KVG codec. However, thanks to this video walkthrough, I managed to work around it and successfully completed my test.

Q: Why Where's Waldo?

A: Because of it's short length. I had played through it shortly before recording and it took a matter of minutes to beat. Since I wanted to do another LP with my fiancee on a different game (that was giving me tons of trouble), I decided to do a LP of Waldo to figure out how to overcome these difficulties.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Q: How do you do your video walkthroughs?

A: I start by playing through the game once for myself, then again with a notepad next to me. I write down pretty much anything I need to know while recording (such as hidden item locations, the optimal path to take, etc). Then I fire up fraps and start recording. After I finish, I take the videos (usually about 4 GB for 10 minutes worth) then edit them into 10 minute videos and then convert them. I then take the converted video files and publish them on YouTube. For console games, such as the TTFAF failed 1%, I use a USB capture card and Cyberlink Power Producer (or Virtualdub) to record.

Q: What's the song you use for your intro?

A: It's a song I wrote myself specifically for my introduction. I called it "catch", but I haven't thought of a true name for it.

Q: Where there any memorable moments while recording?

A: There was the time I had to rerecord the SBCG4AP Episode 3 ending because fraps didn't like the sound for some weird reason. Plus pretty much all of Super Mario World because my fiancee and I were playing it and joking around during the production, making Mario and Luigi dance, etc.

Q: Do you record your videos in one playthrough?

A: For all of them except Super Mario World and Strong Bad 1, yes, they were all recorded during one play session. Super Mario World was recorded throughout three days and Strong Bad 1 was recorded in two sessions.

Q: Do you have any plans for your next LP/Video Walkthrough?

A: As a matter of fact yes I do. I just finished converting the videos for Mario is Missing! They should be online soon. After that, there's the two mystery videos: the mystery LP and the mystery Video Walkthrough that was supposed to be the next one after Strong Bad.

Q: Can you tell us what they are?

A: Well, I guess I can, just because I'm not sure when they're gonna be recorded. The first is Sonic the Hedgehog, which my fiancee and I want to play. The second is the first season of Sam & Max, which I wanted to do since finishing Strong Bad, but was waiting to finish the text walkthroughs.

Thanks for reading. I hope this answeres any questions you may have.

Let's Play The Great Waldo Search Novice & Expert

Well, our newest Let's Play has been on the internet for quite some time as well and was not planned either: The Great Waldo Search for Sega Genesis! This actually came about because I was testing out features and messing with codecs and since this game was rather short, I decided to make a let's play out of it, testing out the codecs and the new features at the same time.

It's a rather horrible game and quite short, only two parts (would have been one but went slightly over 10 minutes): the first is the Novice difficulty of the game, while the second is the Expert difficulty.

Hope you enjoy and thanks for reading and watching another of my Let's Play videos.

Let's Play Super Mario World Co-Op Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

Just wanted to let you know that the newest Jerrynsteph4eva video is a Co-Op Let's Play of Super Mario World! This wasn't intended as the next video series, but rather came about as a random idea. Steph was craving another playthrough of Super Mario World (one of our favorites) and I suggested that we record it this time. She agreed and so we began recording it. We're not exactly the best at the game, nor are we intending to beat the game to 100%, but we figured why not? So we fired it up, me being Mario and Steph being Luigi and began to play through what would be the next video series. A nice thing about these videos is that they take a lot less time to convert for upload, which is means putting them online a lot faster. Below are the videos uploaded so far:
